This is quite nice, lots of small touches.

Although I’m noticing a pattern here… seems to me like “good use of textures” = “best web gallery”.

Well come on it’s no big deal to get listed on one of these gallery sites. They are starving for content, and every idiot who is able to combine out of the box vectors and patterns and cling it together in any HTML editor will be on these sites.
I just think it is ridiculous .
And afterward you read the “Thank you’s” on their own sites as if they would have won an award. lolololol

Yeah right….There is a submit button who does the work lololol…..

Not necessarily. I have submitted several sites here and elsewhere that, while they may not be the “best in the world,” are surely as good as what’s up here (and better than a few examples).

I think a big part of it is the gallery owners’ personal preference, both towards particular design trends as well as towards particular designers.

However, as a whole, it is still a very helpful service to provide inspiration when you need a bit of a creative jolt.

I agree with you Pat on the inspiration Part, allthough 80% are just clones of each other.
You rarely find true unique designs here, and you rarely find sites which contain more than 10pages.
But as you mentioned, as a source of inspiration they are fine… ;)

Laszlo M – Well… I can’t say we don’t like him. We don’t know him personally, and he’s just stating an opinion, like all of us do. Just because it’s negative doesn’t mean it should be disregarded.

That being said – if you run through the gallery up to a few pages back, you’ll notice that there are a number of sites that are similar: specifically a generous amount of textured sites.

I guess I can live with that …I know the truth can be painfull. ;) )

But seriously, I really think dudedudeydude has got the healthy view. ;)
And I unfortunately have to agree with his linklist in another presentation herem (that has been put offline to quickly) in every aspect. ;)

Oh and I am a developer not a designer, but got the task to scan the web for “inspiration” and maybe a designer who fits our bill.
My problem: You simply can’t use most of the designs for big corporate sites. Even if I look at the designers own sites, I see more or less creativity, but I dont see a design in portfolio which is able to cover an realistic amount of corporate information.
    But I keep on looking… ;) )

Here’s a really good idea. Why don’t you all make really good inspirational sites and submit them :P The owner of this gallery site can only show what’s given to him. There are A LOT of gallery website out there, and I gotta tell you this one does a great job of weeding out the crap. Most of the other gallery sites just post whatever is given to them. This site can only be as good as you make it.

@Mike G – We do try actually. I assume that it was my submission of BBH that put it on this site (it appeared about a day or two after I submitted it, although I could be completely wrong.)

However, I did submit the sites I listed down – a number of them are FWA Site of the day awardees, and the other sites were showcased in other galleries – notably Japanese and European ones.

While I do agree that Nick/BWG does weed out a lot of rubbish that can be found on other gallery sites (e.g. CSSMania…), some of us do notice that a number of the sites here fall under his “Web Design Trends for 2008″ post: Basically a bias towards sites with hand-drawn graphics, textures, and medium to heavy Photoshop.

All we’re looking for is a little variety, and some newer stuff. Let’s face it – “textured”, “grunge”, “wordpress layouts”, and “shiny” sites have been around since 2005.

BWG is not like that. As you said, you are a developer, not a designer so why don’t you just stay in your turf and do what your own thing. You talk as if you’re all that (oh I’m a developer but I have a really good eye in designing too). Ew. Don’t comment on anything you don’t know anything about.

    Tstststs….Grow up kid.
By that you say no customer has the right or talent to judge for himself if it is a good or bad or suitable design for his company.
Well sorry the world doesn’t tick that way.
Design is not a science JC.
And let me give you something on your way to learn from, something I really think is the essence of (Marketing related) Design:

    Design is
    to make a synthesis of
    Needs + Information + Colors
    in order to create something
Greater than the Sum of its Parts.

    (Found on a t-shirt from a real designer). ;) )

It’s just one of those gallery sites that content-hungry. So anyone whose designs get approved here are just “idiots” who are able to combine out of the box vectors and patterns and cling it together in any HTML editor. So to everyone whose sites are here on BWG, it really means nothing. So you all SHOULD NOT be happy. You did not win an award. It is ridiculous. We should all believe duddelmore :) (rolling eyes)

While I would disagree with the statement “nothing special to be showcased on these galleries”, there really is a good amount of “off-the-shelf” designs that are being showcased.

A great number of them simply visit Photoshop tutorial sites (notably PSDTUTS), learn a few tricks, do up a website using what they learned, and then pass themselves off as web designers.

This is the reason why I’m not impressed by a a number of sites showcased here, or on a number of other CSS(insert-name-here) galleries – a lot of them aren’t excellent examples of web design – they are excellent examples of good Photoshop.

Good web design is all about information architecture – the ability to take the content in question, and deliver it to the intended audience in a clear and easy to use manner, while maintaining brand identity, with an attempt to be unique, yet stay familiar to the users, in terms of usability.

And while I still feel that it is still worth something to have your work be “accepted” as a good design, I find it the credibility of gallery sites such as these questionable when they themselves, on a frequent basis, cannot even recognize what true great web design is.

Anyway, that’s just my 2 cents. I’ll let you boys carry on the flame war.

I agree that some gallery sites just post whatever is submitted to them but yes, I believe that BWG does a good job in weeding out the rubbish. Although maybe sometimes some points are missed out, but sites that are posted here are good enough to be here. But what is posted here are only the ones that were submitted so I don’t think there is any point of complaining why other really great sites aren’t posted here.

Take, say, a singing competitionl for instance. The winner, I’m sure is not the best singer in the whole world but because that person joined the contest and took his chance, then he is where he is. And the ones with supposedly bigger talents, unless they take their chance, will be stuck with jobs they never even dreamed of doing.

And as for duddelmore, you made some good points there, but the reason why I think people disliked you was because of the first post you made. If people are happy because they get “recognized” in some gallery site, I think we should just let them be. As psychology has it, people who say negative things and hates to see other people happy are just expressions of frustrations or hatred towards oneself – something you cannot let out so you decide to throw it out on others instead. If people are happy because they have “achieved” something that you might consider “small” or “non-sensical” or “nothing to really rejoice about”, I think it’s better to just let them be. They are not running you down or causing you problems in your life so why even spend time getting irritated over these very minute things, right?

As what we were always taught, “If you ain’t got nothing nice to say, then don’t say anything”. I know you’re smart, so you should know better :) If you think you are smarter than these “idiots” and “ridiculous” people, then just be thankful that you are ;)

But I do confess a little frustration. While researching for a designer and agency and reading so much self rigtheous and hollow blabla over and over again. Looking at too similiar designs over and over again.
But I will do penance and take in consideration that JC is actually over 16. ;) ))
