@dude: I think the whale represents their tagline which is “Monstrous Appetite”

Cheers. That’s what I had thought as well.

I guess the whale is more of a “current theme icon” than a logo.

(I mean, what happens when they change their tagline to “Fat-free websites… all of the goodness, none of the fluff!”? The whale joins the dole queue?)

I love the details in this site – especially the contact bubble. Nice touch.

I think the fact that this site has appeared on so many other design websites that in itself should count for something.

So let me start off by saying I like the Web site and in no way am I trying to say something negative about it.

But after reading this article on the Web site (http://squaredeye.com/notebook/articles/rebranding-squaredeye/) I am confused on who actually designed it? Was it the company, “Able” or was it the actual Squared Eye designers.

While the Web site is definitely pretty and uses tons of jQuery effects to make an impact, it really needs some tighenting up in the most basic area’s. I see lots of margin variations and difficult navigation, showing no proprietary focus. Starting to be a designer in 2006 and doing this work is great. But like I said before, I would like to know who actually desinged the Web site.

    Great job though.

@ Johann: take another gander at the favicon and you’ll see a squared eye.

This is by far one of the best I’ve come across yet. I visit this site almost daily to just marvel at it in all its magnificence.

@Patrick and any one else who cares to know.

Squared Eye (me : Matthew Smith) designed the site, and developed the web strategy. The logo/identity was developed by our good friends and partners at Able.

I’m always glad to get insights and comments about the design here, and I’ll keep working on refining the design.

The whale represents our appetite for tiny details. They eat Krill, tiny tiny Krill, and tons of it. We eat details, the tiny ones that make a simple site into an experience. I’m glad the site gets people thinking so much!

    Have a great weekend!

The typesites interview explains the technique. Basically, by placing a .png with a width of 100% in side a div with a width of 100%, you can achieve that effect. Pretty impressive work.

I don’t understand why everybody thinks that this design is so good. I don’t think that is anything “super cool” in here.
