    Looks pretty similar to SimpleBits.

Haha. You’re right it does. I think it’s different enough though to warrant a Best Web nod.

Lots of sites are similar to SimpleBits, and SimpleBits is similar to a lot of sites. It’s just the way things go when the direction is generic web 2.0 styling.

That said, this IS Doug Bowman’s site (ex-Google guy who got up and left). So… is it identity theft? Or just web 2.0-ness?

This guy is good. He’s respected. And how knows what he’s doing. With that said, I am tired of seeing so many niche article hubs.

It’s definitely a similar layout. I’m sort of disappointed. He’s a pretty established, world renowned designer. You would think he could come up with something a little more unique rather than settling for the overdone 2.0 look. Now, I understand you are always going to have designs that are similar. It’s not like you can crawl the whole web to make sure yours is unique…..but come on. Of course, he was one of the pioneers of the look, so DDD raises a good point.

Seen this dude speak a couple times – he’s pretty captivating. This site? Not so much.

Surprised to see someone as respected as Doug Bowman specify Helvetica as the first font on “body” property. Helvetica doesn’t render properly on Windows and looks appalling.

A nice way to display the portfolio, it offers enough eye-candy to make you look but not enough to leave, thus clicking to view the full project. Less is more, and while this design isn’t graphic-heavy, it offers a smooth look and feel, which is very inviting.

Very good use of the color brown as well, without making the whole site seem too dark, it is quite the opposite.

I don’t think this guy is extraordinarily good at all. A lot of designers are waaaaay better than him. He’s just one of the few who got lucky.

Take a look at his PORTFOLIO page. They look like designs from the early 90s.

The “look and feel” is decent enough. Not sure why he chose a black background on only the portfolio page, or the fact his lower div doesn’t exist on that page. Maybe to make the thumbs stand out with the black? Who knows. The huge PNG pencil is a tad overdone. I like the overall layout, just some consistency issues.
