    For my personal understanding, if a awebsite is featured in a “best of” gallery, I expect them to also be proofed if everything works the way it should.
    Lately I must realize that not only the sites get more mediocre here, some of them are simply not really tested. Like on this one lightboxes do not show what they are supposed to etc.
    Same with the elliot j. Stocks site. Links are not working etc…
    TEST YOUR SITES GUYS!

    This site is bland and not interesting at all. Just a bit of clean type. It doesn’t even work properly.

    Well, I didn’t actually see anything wrong with the lightboxes, so I don’t know what that’s all about.

    But, the design is rather plain, which I don’t mind too much because I prefer minimalism over anything else. But this site seems lacking a little.

    And I don’t really understand the links on the left of the pages. They all don’t really go anywhere.

    All in all, I don’t think it’s too bad, because like I said, I like minimalism. But I think this site could use a touch more creativity, and the designer needs to take care of those weird links along the left side.

    i like the simplicity of the design and agree with zach that there seems nothing wrong with the lightboxes and the links are pointless.

    the typography is nice and the simplicity good - not ground-breaking but a good solid example of less can be more!

    I’m the designer behind this website, and I’ve read through the comments and tried to filter out the constructive critisism.

    I added the “links” on the pages because I thought it felt strange when they existed as markers on the blog and portfolio, and then disappeared when reading an entry or a page. But I see your point and I agree, it wasn’t meant to be a permanent solution either.

    And I don’t know what Saun and Rob are talking about. So, if you guys would like to explain the problem your experiencing and I’ll look into it.

    As for the design, I’m a huge sucker for minimalism, and of course I want that to show on my site as well. I love typography and good use of space, the creativity and whatnot you call it is in the portfolio.

    @ Joel

    touche’

    For the links, I would just set the cursor to pointer or something, take away the href so it doesn’t jump to the top of the page when you click on them. Any trick to make them not seem like broken links I guess, if the case is that they have to be anchor tags.

    And for the design, like I said I like minimalism also. I think the typography on your site is really good, so if that’s what you were going for then I have no real gripes with your design. It’s just my personal preference with minimal design is that there at least be some sort of draw to it or graphical appeal, and because your site is more about the typography, it doesn’t have that.

    But the type layout is great, and that was your intent. My opinion is your site is good, all the other stuff is just my personal preference.

    Much respect to Joel!

    Its about time a designer can come on here and take people’s personal opinions and criticism and chew up and spit out what’s of no use to them, but stay open minded at the same time. Well handled Joel!

    Stick to your guns and what you enjoy. If your cup of tea is minimalism, than have at it! You have some great work.

    Thank you Zach and Josh.

    I, just like anyone else, want to evolve and get better at what I love to do, that’s a bit hard when people just complain about something not working without even describing the problem at hand.

    The design is based on typography, because it’s a blog and a portfolio. I don’t use any advanced background graphics because I don’t want anything to distract readers from viewing my work or read an entry in the blog.

    I’m very glad you enjoyed the typography Zach, cause that’s what I’ve put my heart and soul into. My previous comment wasn’t directed at you.

    And thanks a bunch for the inspiring words Josh, I truly appreciate it!

    I enjoy doing minimalistic work once in a while too, but this “best web gallery” website is nothing ground breaking (even considering the minimalism aspect). To me, it just looks and feels like a generic wordpress theme. Sorry, this is my opinion, take it with a grain of salt.

    But hey, it looks clean and your work in the portfolio section is impressive :) Congrats

    In case you want some examples… Here’s a website that focuses on minimal designs (a complete rip-off of bestwebgallery.com):

    http://minimalexhibit.com/

    There’s a few sites there I would considerate a real good minimalist sites.

    @davidck:

    You’re thinking it’s a rip because the layout is similar, but in fact, that (this) layout is a common standard for gallery sites.

    I never said his layout is a ripoff. I said minimalexhibit.com is a ripoff of bestwebgallery.

    I just said his layout is uninspired and there are tons of better minimalist website out there.

    @dudeydudeydude,
    Sorry, didn’t see you mention for “gallery sites”.
