Ingenious portfolio yourself Jonas…Just because YOU don’t like it, doesn’t mean a hundred other people won’t. Your opinion does not define the web, I’m sorry.
Yes Matthew Thomas you are correct. I didn’t mean to come off as if saying they copied it, I’m saying that when this was original, Struck was the first with this element, so I revert to that whenever I see it.
@Rich – That Struck Creative site is a pretty good flash design, thanks for the link.
As for this site, I really like it. Who cares that the ruler thing has been done before… it works well for their site and I also like the transparent container.
I like the the combination of the giant header and smaller body text. Different I guess. I love the detail in the transparency.
My only gripe, and I always have one, is that once your nearing the end of the page, nothing is taking up the right hand side of the page. Since it’s a blog it would be nice to see a blog roll or something else interesting down there.
I’m not sure when Struck’s site was released, but Squarespace’s blog has been around for a time already. I’m pretty sure this has been out for at least 6 months. (It took awhile to show up on BWG)
However, the big “BLOG” title, I believe, was first popularized by http://blog.fl-2.com/
If a prospective client saw their build it yourself tool and thought, “oh, that’s cheaper than getting a web designer and we can do it ourselves, lets use their tool to create our website”
The hardworking web designer has lost the job and their income. Great stuff eh? Not.
This plus other build it yourself tools like WordPress as ddd mentioned, all have design limitations for a non web designer.
They are built with a set format and structure and allow for ‘re-skins’ and tinkering.
But to get something purely bespoke and fitting, companies will always turn to designers for the raw inspiration and talent, this is why we wont go out of business Just yet anyway!
It is only small time hackish web designers who would be worried that Squarespace would put them out of business because it offers functionality that is equal to your talent – Douchebag.

This is getting ridiculous. Who will make bigger font size next time? One letter across whole page?

As for the blog design…. I like it. Even though though the ruler idea is from http://www.struckcreative.com
I like the big typography!
I think it’s an overall nice design.
@Rich: I that ruler idea isn’t particularly original so though it looks similar doesn’t mean it was ripped off of that particular site.
I personally love this, great blog done very well.
Good job!

Everything is just very well executed.
A nice work, good post and good resources. The colours are so nice. Not so much but the essential. Good the background!
Interesting, i do wonder if the big text adds a bit too much visual noise though, initially i don’t know where to look.

Other than that, I like it.
The giant header really works wel. The colors are nice indeed.
@Jack:
You’re right it does feel a bit “naked”

@dudeydudeydude you are wrong. The ruler element was first implemented by Struck. Period.
Correct fake rich
Not sure how long Struck’s been around… but it’s definately been years. Significantly longer than SS…
I wonder which part of my comment insinuated that I was actually making an absolute statement, rather than an assumption.
Nevertheless, further discussing it would be beside the point.
I hate square space.
They could well ruin a web designers life.

@James
If that was true, then wordpress + free templates should have ended everyone’s career ages ago.
