Nice design. The right hand menu is a bit of a change to the norm. However the font choices are horrendous. I think perhaps using baskerville was an attempt to stay clear of this georgia trend floating around, but it hasn’t really worked.
The spacing on the blog needs addressing too, a little too cramped.
This site is great, so is the typography. Only thing I would suggest is switch up the styles between the white and the black… maybe a sans for headers instead of the script serif on the white side so not EVERYTHING is in italics.
Lack of contrast in the sidebar menus really is a problem (read eye strain). Odd decision there, unless you want your site users squinting and getting close to the screen to read your site, then it’s great!
Maybe I’m a creature of conformity, but the reverse alignment totally weirds me out. Agree with tzGallery, that contrast needs work, especially with the large white content div next to it, it just makes things worse.
@Rich: I know enough about typography to know when something is difficult to read. The site is great, but the typography isn’t. Then again judging by your site readability isn’t one of your priorities.
By the way, I don’t see how a university project from a year or whatever ago has anything to do with this website. It’s titled OLDindex for a reason. Nice try though.
Did you really take down your old site just because I referenced it? Haha

uhmmm, realrich, trying to publicly embarrass and call out somebody on some of their work doesn’t really come across as very professional…
if your on here to promote your site, or because you love design, then why would you just be constantly making fun of other peoples work? All you are doing is making yourself look like a total douche, not the creative designer you claim to be.
I didn’t take it down, and it certainly wasn’t because of what you said. I renamed it, because I wanted to keep the topic on the website featured.
I know it’s bad work, but like I say it was a university project, not something I want associated with what will be my real portfolio in a few weeks to come.
However, everyone is entitled to their opinion, so when I’m featured on the Worst Web Gallery, I’ll hear you out.

@jack
yeah we’ve all made and published stuff we arn’t proud of today, but in the moment thought it was amazing, its all part of the learning proccess ;)
Thanks for the comments everyone! I always appreciate constructive criticism and comments; positive or otherwise.
The whole concept of the right hand navigation was to experiment with breaking browsing norms and present something a little more unique.
Baskerville was used as menu items and and headings to more closely tie the site to my identity and printed collateral ( and yes, I was avoiding Georgia too).
Is it the best design? I would never make that statement. I think it functions well because of the simplicity of the site, and the uniqueness of the ux. Displaying selected works and articles efficiently was the ultimate goal. I didn’t want the interface to overshadow the main content, yet still function simply. Whether or not I was successful in this attempt will take more time to decide.
My site is constantly being updated, which includes improvements to structure, color tweaks, and typography, so I appreciate the above points.
Thanks again for your comments.

What’s up with the current trend of people putting uni/personal work up on their portfolios and passing it off as paid client work.
@twhite: “CLIENT: Aphex Twin” - not really. Might want to make the “uni project” thing a bit clearer.

Yea, misrepresenting your work is not cool. I do a lot of personal work but it’s clearly distinguished, so that’s pretty retarded
One would think having [student project] directly to the right of the title of the project would make it clear that it wasn’t a paid project for the client listed. Also, the description of those projects outlined which class it was for and a number of other class details.
The reason the ‘client’ was listed on those was mostly for consistency of all pieces. On student projects it clarifies who the pitch or project was for.
There was no misrepresentation. I guess I have to dumb it down further for some people.

What’s wrong with putting up personal work or school work? It still shows off your skills; it doesn’t always have to be about experience.
I agree about the righthand sidebar by the way, Baskerville italic is nice for headers but for the actual content? Not really imo.

Nice and good stuff for trying the right hand align for blog thing.
Only thing I would say is the font on the right hand bar is a little hard to read on. I have looked at the site on a couple of different monitors.
Also agreed with the above comment from Jack, it does feel a little constraint, but that maybe that there is so much white space to the left.
Good job though!
