this site takes way to long to load. and why do I have to wait to stuff to continue to load after it’s done loading?….I can’t get passed that. The site failed.

Your flashy transitions and spinning graphics aren’t worth that.

Regardless of the load times, the use of flash is absolutely unnecessary. This is why I dislike the format so much, because people use as an end-all to rotating pictures and animations that do nothing but clutter the user experience.

It’s a guilty pleasure, the transitions are enjoyable until you decide to pay attention to the content and then it becomes really annoying. You rarely see good usage of Flash in websites.. I did think the Water Life website featured earlier was brilliant though

Some love flash, some loathe flash and as a modern day user experience where people want information ‘NOW’, this site fails, as the lengthy loading times encouraged me to switch off.

Please get over yourselves about “unnecessary flash”. Flash will always be used in some form or another in a website, in this case it works brilliantly. If you are stupid enough to try to recreate the functionality of this website in HTML and Ajax/Javascript, please let me know. I would be interested in seeing how terrible the experience an user would encounter is.

Also, I’m not sure if anyone realizes this but if you click the arrow, it skips the intro that takes a long time to load and goes straight to the site. I loaded the entire thing in less than a second so I’m not sure what everyone is talking about.

@Rich, same here although as this is the case and you can skip the loader, it begs the question, why have a loader in the first place?

I like this site especially as this is what this guy specializes in, “Concepts, Design, Motion and Actionsctipt” and as it is a personal site then rock on with the flash I say.

The portfolio views are impressive but I find myself always drawn to the more standard flat panel view as it seems a better browsing experience, the other effects as nice as they are just seem like an additional step in order to see the work, if this makes sense?!

Anyway nice site none the less.

The loader is there just if you want to be patient enough to check out some badass AS3. As far as SEO, being a designer, I don’t see SEO being much of a factor, especially if your skills speak for themself. I agree Rob, on the flat panel browsing experience.

“As far as SEO, being a designer, I don’t see SEO being much of a factor”

    Such a blinkered view!

It’s probably one of the ‘MOST IMPORTANT’ factors in web designer, right from the way it is structured and built, to the content. Maybe for the big brands and agencies this may apply but for the majority of new business and less well established, SEO is a BIG factor.

I actually can’t believe you made this statement with being in the industry yourself and being quite a talented designer too!

It could be said that banging on about SEO and wanting ‘information now’ is a somewhat blinkered view of a guys online portfolio which is obviously created as visual design / art design / experience site.

In the end, he’s putting himself about, he’s here on bestweb, he’s top in google for ‘the toke’ he’s all top four when searching his name. So he is generating interest through applicable channels. He also uses SWF address so his .swf is not an impenetrable fortress.

You’re confusing the purpose of this site, created as a showcase of his unfettered ‘art direction’ / ‘motion design’ / ‘flash design’ / ‘sound design’, with something more utilitarian designed to cast its web wide and capture billions of people.

… Also capitalising your words in an attempt to sound authoritative is usually seen as ridiculous.

And the Flash witch hunt continues.

    Honestly, it’s all just context.

It’s a personal portfolio site. He’s the client. There’s nothing to SEO here other than his name and his URL. Judging by his skills, he knows the limitations of his platform (no hand held Apple products), and his target audience, and what the purpose of his site is.

He specializes – let me repeat that – specializes in Flash and Actionscript. What was to be expected? SVG? HTML/CSS/AJAX? COBOL?

I honestly wonder if all the anti-Flash people come from a cult or something. So what do you people all wear at meetings? Black turtlenecks and jeans?

Well I guess this is pretty late in the discussion to say that I generally avoid any flash website, just not my bag.

However this site is stunning, except for the portfolio section. I would expect a more interesting way of browsing the portfolio of someone who specialises in flash.

Our opinions just totally conflict so we’re just going to have to agree to disagree, I’m not anti flash, nor is SEO the be all and end all but to disregard it as un-important was a naive remark from Rich, that’s all…

@Joshua thanks for anwsering that for me haha took the words from my mouth… What I was trying to say Carl, is that when you have your own portfolio, SEO is not a key, integral part of your site as it would be for a client.

The point of a portfolio is not for SEO, it is to showcase your work. If someone wanted to hire me they wouldn’t type in “hire rich graphic designer” in Google. They would browse these inspiriational sites and see who is getting the most hits and whos work they like the best, or from word of mouth. I doubt any potential employers(design wise) are going to see a portfolio of great work and say, “Hey, let me check out this guys SEO…”

Your point has been clearly made and I agree. To be honest there’s many offline methods to drive traffic to a site, I appreciate that this is within the ‘portfolio’ section and I suppose it doesn’t have to adhere to the rules but nonetheless it’s still nice to practice these methods if it can be achieved within a portfolio ;-)

rich, in all honesty its pretty hard to consider you as a professional web designer when all you ever do is leave mocking comments with a hint of “im right everybody else is an idiot” mentality.
