Still not quite sure why there is a whale and the ocean and how it relates to the name “Squared Eye”… can someone elaborate?
Personally though, I’m surprised this was given a Best of. It’s not a bad site by any stretch – in fact, it’s quite pleasing, but that sliding effect isn’t anything new, and the color scheme is a slight (ok, tiny) readability issue.
Wow, thanks for the best of rating Nick. What a treat! As for the comments here, why don’t you all email me or ping me sometime and lets chat about improving some of the things you feel aren’t working, or at least discussing the merit of my decisions.
after reading through the site the whale is one of the most clever logos / “mascot” I’ve seen in a while- eating millions of pounds of krill (sp?). Very fitting for squaredeye’s motto!
It goes against almost everything i consider to be a design ‘must’ but i can only say that i’m completely and totally in love with this site… it’s just beautiful.
Wow, there are so many cantankerous individuals on BWG. Personally I think this site is great. Lovely typography, interesting composition and subtle – but effective – use of colour. Great work.
I really like this one
~ The color swatch is nice
~ It’s easy to navigate and the content flows very well.
If I had any recommendation:
~ The italic font on the grid-layered background.
With the combination of the italic and the repeating boxes, it makes it slighty difficult to continue reading that particular paragraph. But that’s just a recommendation and it doesn’t hold water to the accomplishments made with the design decisions.
@Geoff: Are we ‘cantankerous’ because we have a different sense of style or taste? Perhaps some of us have a keener eye than others and are therefore more critical.
Hardly that. I just see the same names shitting on sites time and time again. Sometimes it’s deserved, sometimes it seems the criticism is born out of sheer malevolence (or perhaps insecurity).
I think that it deserves it’s place here. Sometimes the text is a bit hard to read but I think that overall it’s a great site. The background is pretty sweet. There are a few layers that make it happen. Great job!
It’s not a bad site. Not at all. But there is an issue regarding the readability due to the grid background (as noticed by others as well), the color, and the typography for the paragraphs.
My only point is: the readability issue doesn’t make it a “bad” site per se, but IMO, would have been enough of an issue to not warrant a “best of”.

The designer for this site has an incredible attention to detail! I could not find anything not to like about this one.

Wow, no footer?
Upon looking deeper into the site I must say… very awesome.
The case studies are really well done, the layouts are unique and I like the menu that runs beneath the whale.
DDD, admit it dude… its a good site. I say it deserves best of.
Gack! Just about everything is written in a different font/style. Can’t read a thing!
And the flow is all wrong. It just doesn’t work.
Nice layout on the case studies – but Best of? Not quite.

I wouldn’t change a thing on the site. Truly amazing typography – something that’s easily neglected on many websites.

But hey, I don’t run this gallery.
i usually have a tall glass of haterade every morning
that said, i do like most sites on here and esp appreciate those that pay special attention to details.
I don’t mind the cantankerous comments.
Most (not all) of the sites featured on here have accomplished a level of success that could only be improved by nit-picky details.
Flattery is great and all, but it’s not going to help the designer in knowing what will push their site from good to great.
Bit drab and background gives me a headache / dizzy feeling… think I need a rest.
Typography nice though.
