@North Pole Project Studios: And some people should hang up their design skills for good with attitudes like that. Yes you. That being the case, you might consider a professional career at being a douche bag. So far, you’re proving to be stellar at it!
What’s even more amusing is that others are filling up the comments section with a rebuttal, as if that’s some sort of upstanding quality. Boo-hoo people, seriously. I’ll try this again for the sake of giving more input since even the author found it necessary to write in and cry a little.
The overall design is good. The colors and small details bring out the overall design. HOWEVER, the face and rollover, in my opinion, take away from the rest of the site. It just doesn’t fit well.
I’m not going to apologize for my comment, and this isn’t your website, so until my post gets removed, that’s where I stand. And yes, I’m in the process of getting my bachelors in douche bag with a minor in asshole. Cheers.
Diggin’ the site James. Good stuff. Not sure about the advertising on a personal blog, but if someone will pay, more power to ya. And really love the integration of the illustration. Feels solid and connected. Oh, and dig the treatment of the links in the top right corner.
Anyway I have to agree that the first comment in particular was a bit strange to read on a web design gallery. I wouldn’t make the leap to suggest that it arose from any kind of envy. I think it was just a poorly calculated and insensitive remark however NPPS’s attempt to defend it.
Site: great attention to detail, the back to top arrow is particularly pleasing with the smooth scroll, and I enjoyed poking around to test the execution of various elements. I think the obscuring of mature images is a nice touch. The ‘depth’ of quality in this site design is what sets it apart.
I personally like the implementation of his face on there. I find all the interactivity with the rollovers to be fun and interesting, causing me to stay on his site longer. It’s the guys personal blog and he’s having fun with it, adding his personality to it. Who cares what the guy looks like. It’s not exactly good critiquing etiquette to say it looks bad because you think the guy is unattractive. That seems sort of ridiculous to me.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with putting his face on there with a rollover. As Zach said, it’s the guys personal blog so he can do whatever he wants with it. And as for you Mr. North Pole Project Studios, yeah you can keep where you stand. Your site sucks anyway. It’s nothing compared to this very artistic site. That’s why poor you keep commenting on these pages to at least get your ilnks up on BWG coz I bet my 2 cents that if you submit your site here, it will never get approved. Boo-hoo!

Some artists faces should be heard, not seen.
Was thinkin the same thing.
Fascinating. So I guess design envy causes people who suck at designing to be complete assholes.
Yeah, have to agree with what you’re getting at there, Brad. Those first two comments were unnecessary.
Anyway, really clean and fun site, and great art work!
@Brad: Design Envy – exactly. You nailed it on the head Brad. Keep up the good work.

Integrating an Illustrated profile character would solidify the site’s theme a bit more.
Otherwise, those illustrations are great. though the huge $75 banner ads for a personal blog is overpowering.
Author,
That’s a fantastic idea, and would fit well with the rest of the artistic illustration theme. Good call.
Nice illustrations by the way !

How can you ‘hear’ someone’s face?

And that logo of your Mr North Pole Project, may I ask if that was that done in MS Paint? Just curious.
Glass houses NPPS. There’s a reason why many people’s websites don’t appear on this site (myself included) they simply to make the cut!!
Learn from where the designer went right (or where they went wrong) and incorporate it into future designs!!
I think it is a rad design. I agree that the picture of the dude could be more integrated by getting some sort of cartoon stylisation going.
It really is a juicy fun site with lots of easter eggs. Fantastic. Wish I had the brains and the skill to do something like this!
Although North Pole Project could do with learning some tact, I also think that picture is a mistake.
That picture makes him look like a psychopath – which if you follow the links to his wife’s blog and other pictures you can clearly see he’s not.
Plus, do people need to know he was abused as a child? That seems a little _too_ open.
Otherwise I think the design is excellent.
