blabla, blabla, blabla….with your high standards…why are you coming here anyway?
Gimme a break, what a sissy you are.
Real innovative design will hardly be found here.
I consider this gallery the bargain counter of design (ALL seen before but sometimes with pretty good variations). So it doesn’t matter….as long as it is well designed…who cares?

wow….please be quiet both of you (Rich and Roger) your arguing over cars and tires on a web design gallery site…. please, lets comment on the websites shall we? If you have a problem with someone else and their comment how about emailing them directly eh… jees, or maybe meet them outside for a handbag fight :-)

My 2 pence, I like the clean look of this site, and also prefer it to their old one.

What I would say is a little more interaction on the nicely styled buttons would be lovely, at the moment there are no hover effects. Other than that nice site and content.

But if I don’t argue with Rich, how will the entire Internet know I’m right? =P

I don’t get it, you all think there is tons of inspiration because it uses Helvetica? First off, as designers we have to get rid of the stupid Web 2.0′ish look — this is still it! Let’s make everything look like a button, use some gradients, and call it a day! That’s so fucking lame, think of something new. The reason you think it looks the same is because all Web site are starting to look the same. Don’t get mad at the player, get mad at the game! Innovate, don’t hate. Create, don’t speculate.

Yes, think of something new and never use a gradient. Hell, let’s all just start inventing new colors while we’re at it. Moron.

28 comments just for this? Sad. All I was saying was that the inspiration from this site is 50% from other ones. I’m an original designer, I try to do original stuff, not do the same shit everyone else is doing. I guess it would be wrong and unjust for me to wish that everyone else do the same. Oh well

Those icons are not free. I’ve paid for them myself a few years back, when everything didn’t look like that.

    The icons are from http://www.icondrawer.com/

I like this site layout. It works. I find it more similar to http://campaignmonitor.com than anything else. Even the same icons :P

Guys, whether it resembles another site or not, people will have put a lot of hard work into this site, and obviously someone thought it was good enough to be featured here.

Just try to remember the guys from Light CMS will be reading these comments, don’t just be dis respectful, try to be constructive yeah?

It ain’t fun to read otherwise.

@Trond: were they stock icons? (serious question) Because if they were, then it’s not much different. Anything sold as “stock” are intended to be bought and used as often as possible, thus they can’t be too brand-specific, because of that very purpose.

So if you’re serious about your brand, and you have the budget to do so (and I would assume that the company running Light CMS would have the budget to pay an illustrator’s hourly rate), one should have every element of the site custom.

Everyone knows that it’s the small details that make a difference.

I think the issue here is that the company behind Light CMS probably decided to move forward with a design which was “inoffensive”, in order to appeal to as broad a market as possible, rather than try to create an original design.

    However…

(And I will stress that this is my personal opinion, based on my own experience in branding and advertising, so feel free to disagree)

Unique branding is too important in this day and age. By trying to appeal to as many people as possible, a company will create the image of being a commodity, and their target market will view them as expendable, replaceable, or nothing special. Which is why it is such a shame in this case, because the product (Light CMS) seems very well put together.

Wow, I just read every comment and I have no idea why.

I do agree the site is somewhat generic (not completely). But as DDD said, the goal was most likely to have an inoffensive design that would appeal to a more broad audience, and in that sense I think it works. In my opinion, it’s not a bad design by any stretch, but some fine tuning on originality could help. Like making custom icons, since that’s already been mentioned.

Whoa yall. Lets quit the arguing and play nicely.

All those elements Rich mentioned seem like “generic” elements you might find in any design.

I don’t think you can say that specific button design, ALL CAPS HEADERS, and that grid is originated solely to 37signals (or anyone else). At this point, those elements don’t have an owner (just like a glossy button is no longer owned by Apple).

If you want to call it this web design generic, you could make a case for it. Nevertheless its well execute and crafted.
