My first impression is, “This is really nice.” I like it, though there are reasons not to.
The grid layout makes me feel “safe”. Kudos for that! And though the color palate is more or less grey and red, I think it works pretty well.
But with that said, there are a few things that could change, the biggest that I should point out is the copy inside the navigation.
Very text heavy. I still haven’t read each paragraph, nor do I intend to. I found it easier to hover each navigation “box” and refer to the link in my status bar — vs. actually reading the text to figure out where it would take me.
But I don’t know — maybe it’s just me. Curious to know what others think.
Great site…that is, if you’re not using Opera. Then navigation, links etc won’t work. And then your browser hangs, and you have to restart your browser.
The same thing happend on jasonsantamaria.com before, but I think he sorted it out.
Aesthetically, the type is great, but in function I agree with RB. It’s a little obtuse. Every area is given equal waiting, so I would find this a frustrating site to frequent for updates and things like that.
In the end though, it’s a personal blog and if you aren’t trying to make money out of it you can’t really do anything ‘wrong’ and the early 20th century biologist diary thing is cool.
The imagery in this gives this whole design an amazing yet strange feel, I’m going to have to say I love it! The secure grid and simplicity really helps to make the rest of the complex images work.
The only suggestion I’d make, and perhaps its just my perception, is that there could be more contrast for some areas of the text. (footer, top line within the boxes, etc.) I like the subtle use of the light gray, but for me it lost a bit of readability.
Overall, though, fantastic work and interesting design concept.
Really my only complaint is that the headings for the nav items don’t stand out enough. Personally, I’d probably make them red and a little larger, and would move the sub-headers under the headers rather than putting them on top… but those are design choices and it’s not my site!
I have to agree with most everyone else. Overall, it’s pretty unique and I like it.

Overall pretty good. Thumbs up..
I disagree, I actually like the text richness
Really happy to see this here. Great work.

I agree with the above comment. Possibly not very original, but oozing with quality workmanship. Very nice indeed.
