Wow…pleasantly surprised the site was featured. Thanks for that. And ouch…brutal comments. But thanks for the honest feedback and suggestions.
Now, a bit in my defense. I’ll be the first to admit that the site bares similarities to analog. And I do browse galleries for ideas and inspiration. However, there was no deliberate intention on my part to copy someone else’s work. I believe that we as designers do often integrate elements of something we’ve seen into our designs, perhaps at a subconscious level. But perhaps I should have been more responsible in researching what was out there before publishing the site.
Anyways, again – no disrespect to anyone. Had a darker color scheme in the prototypes which I may revert back to. And I’ll take note of the line-height issue Rich. Cheers.
Quite harsh comments for something that has clearly been “INSPIRED” by.
Let’s not lose focus on that word because there certainly are similarities between james’s site and analogs but there is a clear disitnction between the two.
There’s no plagiarism involved here, which would be a real concern!
Let’s get down from our high horses and stop acting like we’re all pioneers, as them designers/developers are rare as to what they used to be.
We’re all inspired by what wee see and what we encounter in our daily lives. Maybe these online galleries can be too inspiring at times?
All I can say is that James has a very clear and concise site with some very astute portfolio work.
I agree, people are being ridiculous by calling this a rip-off of Analog. If this site looks too much like Analog.coop, then Analog.coop looks too much like SimpleBits.com. Both have the same kind of red color and both have the same kind of ribbon as a design element.
Just because someone like Jon Tangerine designed Analog doesn’t mean that anything that has a similar style in some way is a rip-off of Jon’s work/
@Vern @Connor. Graphic design is about developing a visual identity, mainly. If we, as professionals, can’t do our homework and create something that differenciates us from the rest in some way, I think we fail. We don’t need to reinvent the wheel and it’s ok to be inspired by other people’s works, but it’s clear that this line was crossed here. The problem is that everyone seems to “borrow” elements from other sites.

*cough* Analog = http://analog.coop/ *cough*
Haha… agreed. And the line heights seem so tight that they are making me claustrophobic, even with all that white space
Yeah… it’s too similar to analog’s site (not that analog invented that “style”). These soft background textures seems to be everywhere nowadays.
The images behind the links when you hover over them is even the same as the logo of analog… this isn’t really best of the web..

And yes, I guess you can say that the site bares similarities to analog which bares similarities to http://simplebits.com/ and that to http://informationhighwayman.com/ which is a bit like http://www.awayback.com/ that resembles http://www.snook.ca/ that uses similar color schemes as http://colly.com/.

Nice job!
Beyond the style – Do we wanna talk about the “three baloon” style for the “services” page? http://jamesmli.net/services.php — It’s the same of http://analog.coop/
Anyway, they are similar but both really well done.

@myriad
I agree with what you’re saying to a certain degree but for me aside from one element there’s enough distinction between James’ site and analogs.
The similarity is really startling. But yes, I can accept it as ‘just inspiration’.
Besides all that, I really like it.
It is dry and sad like a rumpled page of a newspaper.
