I don’t really like the typography, in fact I used google translate to see the pages and “League” didn’t render, it looked better in my opinion.
I don’t like the find out more links they just don’t seem to sit right for me.
What’s up with the footer, it’s just a mess. Nothing is lined up in the Social Media circle and in smaller resolutions the “back to top” button clips the text.
Also the link to his own portfolio and his zootool link seems misleading to have over a bunch of other people’s work, (I know its a blog, not a portfolio, just doesn’t feel right for me)
I DO like the texture and colours, also the blog dates seem nifty.
Oh one last minor thing, #outer_wrap might benefit by being called something else if the “back to top” link is going to reference it.
@Jack: I think the typographie is a matter of taste. Am I understanding correct that you mean you like the not replaced font more than the League one?
I really do understand your footer mention, that region isn`t really finished. That social media stuff is a mess itself with its iFrame-mess. I will realign that.
What I really dont understand are your concerns about the link to my own portfolio and the zoo-integration. This is a blog (mainly) about web design and like a lot other galleries I show stuff that I like. Perhaps the translation wasn`t correct, above the thumbs I describe that this IS other peoples work. And I also don`t understand why linking to my portfolio is not okay?
#outer_wrap… well, you dived deep
Regards and thx for your opion

PS: Did you see the individual styling of the entries?
I really don’t like this site. The Typo is horrible.
The big circle totally out of balance. And it get’s worse on this “mehr davon” page. It seems somebody tried to imitate “art” and missed it completely.
I agree typography is a matter of taste, I’m just not a huge fan of the fonts that were used.
As for the link to the portfolio, I personally think it’s misleading. I know you explain in the text above the thumbs, however I think that they shouldn’t be clubbed together. Your Zoo link could be placed somewhere else, maybe on an about page. And your portfolio link could be removed completely (since it’s already in the intro paragraph at the top) Then, if you really want a list of websites you enjoy , they can take up that entire column, with an appropriate header.
This way nothing is lost, and confusion is avoided (even if it is my own)
the #outer_wrap comment is more a useability thing, the button has no explanation, the only explanation offered is to where it’s pointing to, in this case a vague div header.
You say people wouldn’t recognise your site without the large orange circle, I’d be more conscious of the fact that people are remembering your site for all the wrong reasons with it…
“you seen that site with the big orange circle?”
“Oh yeah, that site that feels really unbalanced”
Sorry to focus on this but I think without it there’d be a lot more clarity within your site, the application of typography isn’t quite there but I do like your grid and I think it would improve without this unnecessary graphic…
The type doesn’t bother me too much, though it does feel like it could be improved upon a bit.
The portfolio was a bit misleading, but Goggle did a shitty job of translating the page, so that could have something to do with it.
Overall, I kind of like the feel of the site. I may like the circle better if it was turned down in opacity or maybe pulled out of the grid a bit more to the left? Not sure.
I initially didn’t like this design, but after looking around the main things that bother me are:
- The margin between ‘Made my day’ and ‘every day’
- Font family for headers ‘Twitter’,'Zoo’, ‘Kommentare’, etc don’t look too great. Also no margin between dot divider underneath looks weird since everything else has at least a 5-10px margin.
Other than those two things I actually like it. I agree with Matt on possibly offsetting the circle out of the grid, could look good.
There are so many things fundamentally wrong with this site. At the risk of parroting what others have previously said, everything from the typography, to the spacing, to the placement of content, the (lack of) visual hierarchy, the spotty readability, to the forgettable “identity” (which appears to have been slapped together in 5 minutes) is suspect.
The individual posts are not helping. All they do is create even more confusion. In a nutshell: everything is all over the place, apparently for no reason or purpose other than to “look different” – it’s really just a gimmicky site with poor fundamentals.
However, based on the actual portfolio site, it seems that the designer isn’t too concerned about readability or usability, or simply doesn’t possess any knowledge of such.
My apologies to the site author for being harsh, but I will call a spade a spade – you need to go back and learn the basics first before trying to execute anything “fancy”.
@dudeydudeydude: I have no problem with critcs, even “harsh” ones. Better than no critics. My personal sites are always experimental and are not intended to fit everyone`s taste. So I take the comments in consideration when improving the site, even if I cant satisfy everyone because of my lack of the fundamentals
Why don’t we all stop bashing the creator of this site and rather divert your attentions to the author of ‘best web gallery’ the submissions in recent months have been very sub-par and I think the title of the website doesn’t help when we see such submissions as this. If this was sat over at cssmania the criticism may not be as harsh!
Even though the points made are very valid and some core fundamentals seem to be missing but that’s not to say that this can’t be tweaked by yourself Marc, we aren’t all award winning designers as in the real world people want to make money…
I’ve been saying that for a long time. It’s not that difficult to get on BWG. All you need are some illustrations, an ample amount of textures, and / or some fancy CSS trickery. Brand / Identity? Style? Taste? Basics and Fundamentals? Those are worth far less on BWG.

the color combination is nice but the font is nothing to write home about…. it’s looks unprofessional and clumsy. it’s layout is like a newspaper type. I don’t really like it.

Removing the BIG orange circle would balance the eye…

@Matt: Thanks for this constructive comment. I will think about the circle suggestion as well as the general typo critics.

Usable and intelligent design is hardly a matter of “taste”. Your portfolio site reflects that clearly.
Thanks Kshi for your comment. Nice to see your work. Not.

It’s your site that’s on the spot here. You submitted it, so live with it. As easy as that.
