Agreed, the effect might look nicer if it faded rather than slid in? at the moment it looks a little bit like an error. Can’t tell whether it is the slide in or slide out that is jarring with me.
Rest of the site, the work and the content is nice.
Obviously a talented guy, but this doesn’t do anything for me. I really don’t like the colours. The background texture is good, its always refreshing to see some texture brought in.
I didn’t really have fun clicking through the portfolio, brilliant looking websites, but I prefer to see it in thumbnail kind of view.
I like slab serif fonts, a lot, but they sure are getting used a lot these days.
I like it but something just seems off for me… too plain? I love minimal styles and all but it just seems to lack that depth that brings it all together.
Also a huge pet peeve of mine now (that this site happened to touch on, but is on many, many sites…) is when people say on their About “Hand crafted on an iMac using Photoshop and hosted on media temple”…
Cool, good for you. But why do we care?
Show me good work and you’ve got my respect, regardless if you’re using Windows ME on a ’01 Dell or a brand new Mac..
I like this site a lot, it’s got my vote. I agree about the menu. I like when you mouse out but I don’t like when you mouse over. I think it should just highlight when you mouse over but keep that smooth animation when you mouse out.
Otherwise, I love the look and the blog is a great read.
I’m on Win/FF and I’m not seeing the delay on the nav – working fine. Loving the background texture and overall design, but there’s something about it that just doesn’t feel right – can’t put my finger on it. Maybe the small body font size and colour… I dunno, something just feels off.
“I hope you enjoy my grungey background and slab serif typeface I stuck on a grid”
Sorry, it looks nice but please can we see something new? It’s not hard to make a minimalist portfolio/blog site. This guy’s portfolio has no commercial work. Please show me something original which was produced for someone other than themselves.
These days galleries are just full of self-promotional blogs or portfolios. Is no one getting any work?
I agree about the comments, somewhat, about the simplicity.
BUT
I think you are clueless. Clearly if you have ever been contracted to do design work, you know there are stages to the process and it’s not like you slap a design in your portfolio the day after you do it. There are NDA’s, development… Sometimes takes months to be able to showcase design works in your portoflio. I do a lot of personal work in my portfolio just like this guy does, hey at least we have portfoios right?

I like the texture but not the menu very much. Maybe some colors would bright it up..
I love this background…Some post in the blog are fantastic. Very nice to see.
I don’t really like the lagged mouseover effect on the menu, it just doesn’t feel right.

Clean design. I agree about the mouseover effect on the menu. I like it, but I think it would be better if it were faster.
Overall, outstanding!

Nice background design

I really like the site, and the delay on the navigation doesn’t bother me. Great job

I totally agree. Nice but the menu should have a background color or something else to make it stand out a bit more.
@Rich
I must take back what I said, though it was concept work it was while working at lightmaker who do a lot of impressive work.
It’s simply too dark and simple. It doesn’t “feel” like a portfolio to me
@Ruben, @Rob, @Matt, @Zach
Thanks for the feedback I have tweaked the navigation hover state and made it slightly fast.
@kok ann huis so should every portfolio site be light and complex?
to me this design feels dark and tight.
I’d increase font size slightly and increase the contrast between font / background.
