- Colors/Contrast
- Nav buttons/tooltips/hover state
Hate the typography… Since most of the type is fairly large, might be a rare opportunity to take full advantage of TypeKit, especially with all the styles going on.
Thanks for featuring HDLive and for the comments so far.
Would be great to understand this typo issue in a bit more detail as to maybe improve on it next time. Is it how the type is rendered on particular machines or is it simply how it has been implemented across the site?
@RichG – We did explore the option of using Typekit or Cufon as font replacements, but ended up using Palatino, for a few reasons.
1) You don’t see it around much, even before font replacement was around as most sites used Georgia or Times as their preferred serif option.
2) It is obviously web safe, again even though we are pushing forward with technology, we felt the chosen font worked well and felt it was a bit pointless adding functionality when it was not needed.
3) It ties in nicely with the logo
Obviously getting these comments are great as we live and learn from them, so any further constructive feedback will be well received.
Thanks again for the feature BWG, and looking forward for more feedback!
The only comment I’d make with regards to the typography is that it’s all very clunky and there isn’t enough clarity, on initial glance everything could be perceived as a headline, the basic rules seem to have been ignored:-
· Headline
· Sub-head
· Body copy
· And so on…
I think if the typography is tweaked with these elements in mind and a clearer distinction is made between each one, (i don’t think the font choice and application is an issue) things may work a little better, as the colour palette is really nice and I like the use of icons and the speakers page is pretty cool! (nice illustrations).
It… looks like it’s for a wedding, or appears wedding related, but is in fact for a technology conference.
Simply put: I wouldn’t take this conference seriously unless it was a wedding expo because of the way the official website was presented: typography, color scheme, et al.
The complete lack of contrast in font/background colour makes it very hard to read (i.e. I didn’t read a single word) I didn’t even realise it was for a tech conference til I read Dude’s comments above. Go look at a few other conference websites – they feature pictures, speakers, the program, an easy way to buy tickets. If you do nothing else, at least change the colour scheme to break up the page into functional sections.

Typography here is a bit of a mess. Line heights and font sizes need more refinement.
I like the hover states of certain elements though.
I love almost everything about this site. Fantastic work.
Only things going on here I like:
- Colors/Contrast
- Nav buttons/tooltips/hover state

Its not my taste sorry, the typography is amateur and very out-of-rhythm

I think it’s nice. The functionality on it is seriously cool, and the typography isn’t really far off being lovely.
Love the color scheme, nav and illustrations. Good job Rob and awesome portfolio.

ha ha ha – not just me then. I also thought it was a wedding site at first glance.

Awesome UI and idea!
Overall I think there are lots of great design elements here, but some sections are just hard to read.

Really? Just seperate the names instead of trying to “look progressive”…or something
I think the best page on the site is the http://www.hd-live.co.uk/partners page because it’s actually readable and has structure.
I like this, just feel that the logo is not quite nice.
